Carpenter Bee problems year after year?
Carpenter Bees are a common sighting and pest problem in New York City and Long Island, NY. These large bees are typically 3/4" to 1" long, and very thick. They get their name since they chew out and make their nests in raw, unstained/unpainted wood.
The reason why carpenter bees return year after year is often due to nesting availability/location. Take for example a deck that the bees come to every year. They are treated in the spring and the bees are killed. But the following year they are back. Now what are the reasons they have returned?
Most likely, the deck has an area where the paint or stain has worn off it, providing a prime location for females to lay eggs. Carpenter bee females will continue to lay eggs into the same piece of raw wood year after year. In time more and more female carpenter bees will appears as more hatch. Anyone with these bees continually must do something about modifying the wood that these bees are infesting. F
